Today we are celebrating another Earth Day. As much as it’s important we acknowledge this precious planet earth every April 22, we really need to do it each and every day. I’m proud how far we’ve come in understanding the impact we have on the planet, but we still have a long way to go. One thing I find really inspiring is all the beauty products being developed that not only care about you, but care about the planet as well.
I’ve been using organic, eco-conscious beauty products for years. I grew up with a mom that was very passionate about health who educated me about how toxic many conventional products are. We would do most of our shopping at the Big Carrot in Toronto, where I grew up, which was a pioneer in selling organic products well before we ever heard of Whole Foods. Brands such as Derma E and Avalon Organics have been around for years, before it was trendy to use organic products. I’m a huge fan of Derma E and use many of their products, but there are a lot of new, great products on the market that are embracing using safe, organic ingredients, here are some of my favorites.
When Tata Harper set out to create her own skincare line, she didn’t want to jut replicate products that were already on the market. Her mission was to give the skincare industry a fresh start with highly effective and luxurious anti-aging beauty products that are completely free of synthetic and chemical ingredients. Her belief is people deserve beauty products that deliver the results they want, without putting their health at risk. Tata Harper is adamant to challenge the assumption that ‘natural’ means less effective. She’s passionate about promoting a modern, health-conscious natural beauty lifestyle that’s committed to safety, honesty and sustainability.

Founder of RMS Beauty, Rose-Marie Swift began to experience some health issues that were causing many problems physically, mentally and emotionally. After a series of tests, she learned that her blood contained toxic levels of heavy metals including aluminum, barium, cadmium, lead and mercury as well as high levels of pesticides and other chemicals. When the technician asked if she worked in the cosmetics industry, she was so surprised, because she had no idea that cosmetics could contribute to serious health issues. After years of rebuilding her own health, Rose-Marie realized that she wanted to help other women claim their right to healthy beauty. That’s when RMS Beauty was born, her acclaimed line of organic color cosmetics.

W3ll People was founded by Makeup Artist Shirley Pinkson, Cosmetic Dermatologist Reneé Snyder M.D, and Treehugger James Walker. They were all passionate about making positive choices in life, specifically when it comes to self care. Skin, our largest organ, absorbs about 80% of what we put on it. Based on that fact, their mission was to create super premium quality cosmetics without using the potentially harmful artificial chemicals found in most conventional makeup.

ILIA Beauty was founded by Sasha Plavsic and launched in Vancouver, Canada in 2011 with its first collection of 6 Tinted Lip Conditioners. Currently based in Los Angeles, the philosophy behind the brand grew from the curiosity of understanding the ingredients on the back of a lipstick box a few years ago. ILIA Beauty is formulated with this in mind, and dedicated to creating the purest products possible. The ethical-sustainable approach embodied in each piece is filled with certified organic bio-active botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

In the three years since Susanne Langmuir founded the Toronto-based, all-natural lip line Bite Beauty, she has created something of a lipstick frenzy. It all started with the launch of her high-pigment lip colors made of food-grade ingredients and has grown to include the 2013 opening of her Soho, New York Lip Lab. At the New York lab, artisans custom blend lipstick on-the-spot, sparking lines before the store even opens for business. Bite Beauty is a small batch operation. Whereas the average lipstick production in a larger facility is upwards of 40,000 pieces a day and they do about 2,000. Susanne feels that when you’re closer to the process and you’ve got a smaller batch and you’re using your hands, you’ve got more flexibility to work with ingredients that are more sensitive.
