In my never ending quest to find brands and products that are non-toxic, I was thrilled to learn about the Think Dirty app. Even when you think a product is clean, Think Dirty is able to highlight each and every ingredient so you know which ones are really clean and which ones are toxic. Considering more and more people are demanding truly healthy products, Think Dirty is a breath of fresh air.
Think Dirty was officially launched in the summer of 2013 by Lily Tse. From a family history of cancer, Lily was determined to understand the causes of some cancers, particularly breast cancer. She was shocked to discover that the cosmetics industry is not regulated like the food and drug industries and many products on the market are toxic. Even if products are labeled “natural” or “organic,” there’s not enough transparency to confirm whether or not they really are.
Keyword or Barcode Search
What is great about the Think Dirty app is, you can either search by keyword or by barcode. So far I’ve just used the keyword search, but you can easily type in a barcode or even scan it to discover whether or not a product is clean and take a deeper look at its ingredients.
For example, considering there’s been a lot of controversy with the Tarte brand, I decided to look up Tarte on the app. I was not surprised to find many products in the moderate to serious category of negative, long-term health effects.
When I looked up Tarte’s Light’s, Camera, Lashes Mascara, it’s a 5 on the Dirty Meter. Then I clicked on the Ingredients category, which shows me there are 18 ingredients in this mascara, two are moderately “dirty” and the rest are clean.
Then I clicked on the “Our Picks” category, which lists mascaras that are considered “clean,” such as Juice Beauty’s Lash Defining Mascara and Pacifica’s Stellar Gaze Mascara.
The App is Free
Yes, the app is free on the Apple iTunes store, but it’s only available by invite on Google Play.
Eventually what I would like to see is a link to the top cleanest brands and/or products on the app. Right now, unless you scan a barcode or type in a keyword, you’ll have to do a lot of searching to discover all the products and brands that are listed as non-toxic.
Think Dirty is very much needed in a world surrounded by toxic, chemically-laden brands and products. Instead of feeling helpless and not knowing the truth about all the products we use on an everyday basis, Think Dirty is empowering us to take control of our health. Now you really can look good and feel good too.
