It’s that time of year! Road-tripping, camping, beach time and soaking up the sun, summer is officially here. And with all the time you’re going to be spending outside, you’re going to be exposed to a lot of sun. It’s okay to get sun-kissed, but you still need to protect your skin as well and not any sunscreen will do.

With so many sunscreens on the market it’s hard to know which ones are best to use. It’s not just about the level of SPF (sun protection factor), but it’s also about the type of sunscreen ingredients used and how clean or toxic they are.

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) just came out with their list of the cleanest, non-toxic sunscreens on the market now. With such a long list of products, we thought we would break down our top picks.

Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen Lotion, SPF30

If you haven’t heard of Babo Botanicals, you should get to know them. All their products are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and dyes, sodium chloride, formaldehyde, and MEA/TEA/DEA. It’s also free of high allergy nut oils, soy, dairy, and gluten. It’s rated #1 in safety on EWG and contains 22% of non-nano zinc, which is the safest, most effective sunscreen. It also contains organic oils, such as jojoba, sunflower and shea butter, as well as anti-oxidants like rose hip and green tea. It may seem pricey at $19.95 a bottle, but remember what you pay for now with clean, non-toxic ingredients, saves you on health issues down the road.

Badger Organic Sunscreen Cream, Unscented, SPF 30Badger, sunscreens, Womenonit.com

With only five ingredients, this is probably one of the simplest sunscreens on the market. It provides broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays using non-nano zinc oxide. It’s water and sweat resistant for 40-minutes of outdoor activity or swimming. It has certified organic ingredients of sunflower oil, beeswax, vitamin E and seabuckthorn which are all very moisturizing. Even the tube is BPA and phthalate free and made with #2 recyclable plastic.

Beauty Counter Protect All Over Sunscreen, SPF30

At $32 a bottle, it’s not the most affordable sunscreen, but the whole family can use this product. Just like the other sunscreens, it uses non-nano zinc, which protects from both UVA and UVB rays. It has aloe, which hydrates the skin and has green tea and blood orange extract for anti-oxidant protection. The ingredients list for me is a little long, so if you’re looking for something with minimal ingredients, you may want to try a different sunscreen.

Goddess Garden Everyday Natural Sunscreen Lotion, SPF30

Goddess Garden, sunscreens, Womenonit.com

This sunscreen is certified organic, reef safe and biodegradable. It also contains several ingredients, but it is rated #1 for safety on EWG. All the ingredients are plant-based ingredients or natural minerals. It uses non-nano zinc, it’s cruelty-free, as well as being alcohol, paraben, phthalate and gluten free. And for the price, you can’t go wrong!

Kabana Organic Skincare Green Screen D Sunscreen, SPF35

Kabana, sunscreens, Womenonit.com

This corn-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, vegetarian and non-GMO sunscreen provides an SPF of 35 or 97% UVB protection. Best part is, it only has six ingredients which we love. What is also great about Kabana is, they take the time to educate the public about why choosing a non-toxic brand is healthier. For example, there’s a Skin Care 101 page that explains the harm these petrochemicals in most other cosmetic brands are doing. Kabana says, “…these chemicals are not a natural part of who you are, they negatively impact your normal biological functions that keep you young and healthy. Exposure to these chemicals over the duration of your life accelerates aging and disease. You’ll be better off without them,” and we agree!

Kiss My Face Organic Face & Body Mineral Sunscreen, SPF30

The Kiss My Face brand has been around for decades. I remember using it as a child, because I had a mom that was very passionate about using non-toxic and organic products and food. It’s nice to see they still exist. With less than ten ingredients, this sunscreen is one of my favorites. It’s also free of gluten, SLS, parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrance and flavors. All the ingredients are vegan friendly and of course their products are never tested on animals.

Juice Beauty Sport Sunscreen, SPF30

Juice Beauty’s SPF30 Sport Sunscreen also has a long ingredient list, but it’s still one of the cleaner sunscreens on the market. Just like many of the other sunscreens, it’s free of petroleum, sodium lauryl sulfates, parabens, propylene or butylene glycol, phthalates, pesticides, artificial dyes and synthetic fragrances. It does use some organic ingredients such as, sunflower oil, aloe leaf juice and resveratrol, which is grape juice. What’s also great is the whole family can use it.

The Honest Company Honest Mineral Sunscreen, SPF50

The Honest Company, sunscreens, Womenonit.com

This sunscreen is new to the Honest product line. It has an SPF50 and provides up to 80 minutes of water-resistant sun protection. It’s been dermatologically, pediatrically and clinically tested, hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, which makes it ideal for babies or people with sensitive skin. It’s made without PABA, parabens and dyes and does not contain any chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone and octinoxate. Even though it has a lot of ingredients, the EWG does give it a #1 in safety.
